And I’d like to share something else with you. It’s something I’ve NOT shared with my members and subscribers BEFORE.
When I went online in 3rd March 2005, I was already going against the tide – right from the start.
I had no friends to support me when I needed it most. My closest uncle became the nearest source of skepticism. My mother was doubtful but I didn’t blame her.
… Because I wasn’t even sure about it myself!
Even until now, the idea of making money online is still considered as an ‘unusual career’ in this part of the world, though more and more people are accepting and embracing it (which is a positive thing!)
I didn’t have a credit card at that time so purchasing anything online was really difficult. (Read: not of age yet to apply)
And it’s not as if I had an abundance of capital; I was THOUSANDS of dollars in debt into my second month online, shooting in the dark bowels of the Internet Marketing arena.
I wasn’t familiar with banking and merchant account setup so a chunk of my time went there too.
I was living in a rural area and I didn’t have a phone line to begin with. I applied for one – and I got a dial-up access. This meant that my monthly bills would be MORE costly than that of a broadband access for *SLOWER* connection.
But having an Internet connection was better than none at all. And choices were –sooooo- limited.
Oh, and did you know that I couldn’t open and withdraw from PayPal and ClickBank too? 
Throw all these in PLUS:
- I had absolutely NO idea how to make money online
- I was financially desperate
- I had no job to fall back on…
… And I was to take care of my mom and still-schooling sister!
It was such a GAMBLE I sometimes have no idea to this day how I pulled through such a trying predicament.
I tried to get my butt back into the workforce and lick my own wounds, but for some reason it didn’t happen.
Maybe it’s because I had very little work experience to be hired back in.
Maybe it’s because I couldn’t speak Mandarin for a Chinese.
One of the potential employers expressed her honest opinion that I should go back to college to study. I would have been in college – if I had the money. But I took my chance with starting my Internet-based business and used up the funds for the next college module.
For whatever the reason may be, the bottom-line was this:
“Edmund, you HAVE to go back to the computer to make this work – DO OR DIE!”
And it truly was a DO or DIE situation.
“Well Edmund, what about your Dad?” you ask.
My parents were divorced 2 years earlier prior to this and knowing my father well enough, I can rely on him NOT to support us financially. It’s a whole new mess over there which I won’t go into due to time and space constraints of this mail.
Anyways…
I gave all of what I got and knew (albeit little). Instead of spending conservative hours online at the risk of increasing the phone bill, I spent LONGER hours.
Instead of working at the computer for 6-8 hours a day, I went for 12-18 hours – and for many nights I was sleepless… too much worry.
Hiding all these problems from my sister was another challenge – good thing she was schooling 5 hours away from home; otherwise I wouldn’t even forgive myself.
Mom and I were already living on less than a meal a day and ‘red notices’ were pouring into our mailbox threatening to cut our lines due to months of owe.
We were on our last brink, so…
*** WHAT ELSE HAVE WE GOT TO LOSE? ***
And what do you know?
When I made my first sale (I still remember the name of my first customer, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, you know who you are JM!) – there was a glitter of hope for all of us.
FINALLY.
A few sales followed and I managed to keep my debt collectors at bay for a while. I was building a business after all. What seemed to be a hopeless cause initially, now finds itself steering backwards, as if I was pushing my enemy towards its own edge.
And by the end of 2005, not only did I achieve my goal for that year – [Operation: Debt Zero] – I saw a 4-figure balance in my bank account.
It was the BEST Christmas I ever had.
For someone who had always been living hand to mouth, and my mother had to endure great sacrifices for several decades of her life, we never knew what it was a very rare sight to see 3-figures in savings, don’t even mention 4.
We were thankful that not only did we pull through our predicaments, we were also grateful that tough times had been no less than a great teacher to us, and taught us many of life’s hard knocks. Even after that most trying year in 2005, I still kept a relatively low profile in the offline world as my business continued to grow and thrive.
I had been privileged to get to know more and more new friends in person this year alone – and I’ve a gut feeling this Christmas will be another GREAT one too!
Now you may have your own set of challenges. You may be responsible to your family and accountable to others whom you care. And in some or many areas, you and I can relate.I have a keen suspicion that you want to succeed badly too, and that you’d do just about anything to make your Online Business work. And if your answer is a resounding YES, here’s something POWERFUL to keep you moving forward:
A friend told me recently that “as long as you want it badly enough, no one – and NOTHING – can stop you from getting it”.
(Yes she’s gone through her own share of trial by fire – and when I heard of it, I suddenly felt I was actually more fortunate than her!)
