Communicating Effectively With Your Audience

Filed under category Other / General by Khai Ng at 12:12 pm.

Speaking in front of a crowd may not be an easy thing to do. It takes a lot of practice and confidence if you want to be able to deliver an effective speech.

After delivering my first speech for an Internet marketing workshop recently, I’ve learned a lot of things about communication and I want to share this with you.

Here they are:

  • If you are worried about stage fright, then my best advice for you is not to think so much about what you are going to say. Just do the necessary preperations but before the speech, don’t rehearse too much because when the time comes, you are going to be put under pressure. Just talk naturally, as though you are speaking to a friend.
  • Don’t talk too fast. There is a tendency to run through your slides very quickly but I’ve learned that the audience will need to take time to absorb what you are saying. I had 45 minutes to do my talk and I prepared 40 slides. I thought I would exceed my time slot, but I went too fast thinking I had to run through quickly and at the end of the presentation, I had 10 minutes left (lol)…
  • Always ask questions because it engages the crowd. If you do not ask questions, your speech is no different when it comes to talking to a white wall. Interact!
  • Look into other people’s eyes and not your slides.
  • Tell funny jokes. When you tell jokes, it helps people to ease up. It will help YOU to ease up as well so try and prepare some good jokes before your presentation.
  • Lastly, if you can’t remember what to say, don’t over clutter your slides with words, just use a few key points on your slides and link them in your mind. Linking is a good way to remember what you want to say compared to reading it directly from your slides.
