As a proven, time-tested Internet Business Model, there is no denying that for most people, making money with Google Adsense ranks among the top 10 Internet Businesses as most popularly used online.

“But is it really just for anyone?” you ask. Here’s my personal take on making money with Google Adsense.

WHAT IS IT IN A NUTSHELL?

Provided by the almighty Google itself, you can place Google ads on any of your web pages (as long as it’s approved by Google). The placing itself is free of charge, though you need to meet their standard requirement of having a substantial content site before having your Google Adsense account approved.

Once approved, you can place Google ads in any shape and size that they provide at any part of your web pages. The Google ads will display ads that are relevant to the nature of your website theme. You get paid for every click your visitors make on the Google ads.

Usually, you don’t earn much from a click so the trick is in having web sites with massive volumes of traffic, and visitors who are acting on impulse.

WHY IT ROCKS

Earning from Google Adsense is considered to be passive, automated income. There is no customer support needed whatsoever and you don’t have to control the ads (depending how you see it). The Google Adsense program makes a nice bonus for adding another income stream, simply by monetizing from every web page or blog posts you have on your websites.

WHY IT DOESN’T

To put it bluntly, to depend on Google Adsense to make a substantial living, on its own, is suicide. It takes time (and I don’t know how long it would take for you) to build a substantial income and start receiving checks from Google every month. Very rarely can you get away with receiving hefty Adsense checks from just one or two websites.

Many aggressive Adsense makers I know build websites into the hundreds and many more resort to blackhat techniques – they’re innocent until caught by Google and this can result in permanent suspension of their Google Adsense accounts. A big price to pay for fooling the Search Engine.

IS THIS FOR YOU?

You might not be expecting this conclusion. Even though making money with Google Adsense is one of the top 10 Internet Businesses online, I won’t recommend doing it. Not on its own, for sure. You have to be prepared to either build multiple websites with substantial traffic and readership interest or use it to complement your existing content rich websites.

Also, I recommend adding other income streams to your websites like selling own products or Affiliate Marketing.

Here are more Adsense alternatives too:

Certainly not a game for just anyone but don’t feel discouraged to try it out when you’re itching to add a new income stream. Just don’t do it on account of financial desperation!

Make money blogging – I am not surprised how this makes to the top 10 Internet Businesses as used by ordinary folks and big companies alike today. I had my first free blog at Blogger (blogspot.com) back in 1999. I started the blog just for the fun of it as it provides a good escape from school work. :-)

At that time, there were very few bloggers around the world so starting a blog was considered uncommon back then. Fast forward today: Technorati (at this time of writing) is currently tracking more than 112.8 million blogs on the Internet!

The blogosphere scene has changed rapidly and for the first time ever in Internet history, now a person can have his own ‘space’ on the net without HTML or complicated technical knowledge, all thanks to the push button lifestyle.

This article explores the possibilities of making money from blogging and whether it’s feasible for ordinary individuals. When I say ‘ordinary individuals’, I am assuming that:

* You have no more than basic computer skills, and
* You’re looking to earn an extra income online but don’t have or plan to own a big company.

Here goes:

WHAT IS IT IN A NUTSHELL?

Whether you own a free account at Blogger.com or WordPress.com, or host your own WordPress blog under your own domain name, there’s no denying that there are people raking in a small fortune just from writing what they love to write.

One example that comes to mind is Kenny Sia of Malaysia. If you check out his personal website KennySia.com, he has a wide mass appeal of visitors coming to his homepage around the clock… just to read his nonsense! (Though I personally think this individual has a strong sense of humor) This man rates average on many accounts, except his publicity and blog traffic differs otherwise. Now he’s a mini celebrity and he gets paid by advertisers to endorse their products on his blog.

There’s also the ‘marketing’ approach where Infopreneurs set up ‘custom’ blogs to share their information freely with their readers. This one does away with strong personality and ‘fluke branding’ but if done correctly, you can also gather recurring visits and grow your readership views by leaps and bounds.

WHY IT ROCKS

Not only are blogs easy to set up and run, the cost is usually next to none and the risk is minimal. You don’t have to necessarily have your own products to sell because options like Google Adsense and Affiliate Marketing are readily available choices for blog income.

WHY IT DOESN’T

Since setting up blogs is relatively easy, this spells nothing more than competing for your readers attention. If your blog doesn’t have interesting content then chances are that your blog will suffer lack of traffic and eventually die out.

If you’re planning to be unconventional by any chance in your approach, you need a strong, appealing personality. Admittedly, not many people have this so it can be truly challenging to build a blog solely for making money.

IS THIS FOR YOU?

Making money from blogging is viable but I would never advise starting a blog solely for the purpose of making money. Yes it makes a good enhancement to your existing business, or building them in large numbers coupled with good content management.

It can quickly turn into a chore, especially if you’re not passionate on what you’re writing about. Be sure to plan your blogging business well before taking the first step. It IS profitable and the idea of becoming a mini celebrity in your own rights is promising, but making money shouldn’t be your sole motivation in starting a blog.

This one is sure to enter my Top 10 Internet Businesses “Hall of Fame”. In fact, building membership sites ranks my no. 1 favorite Internet Business Model. Over the past couple of years alone, more and more people are starting and operating membership sites, though this model had existed during the early days of the Internet.

If you like the idea of residual income, being in control and building your brand, you will do well to consider starting and building membership sites too.

WHAT IS IT IN A NUTSHELL?

In layman terms, a membership site is just like any other web pages you see on a website, except that these areas of the website are secured and password-protected. This directly implies that the contents are not open widely to the public, and requires either an act of registering or signing up as a paid member.

The latest example of popular membership sites comes in the form of Social Networking websites like FaceBook.com, MySpace.com, Friendster.com, and more.

You don’t have to limit starting a membership site in web 2.0 area though. You can also build a free or paid membership site in niches on demand like Health & Fitness, Investment, Trading, Internet Marketing, Cookery… you name it.

WHY IT ROCKS

In my personal opinion, a membership site is what I regard as a strong and solid Internet Business Model. For one, the profit points are flexible and many:

1. Charge for admission on a one-time or recurring fee.
2. Build a solid mailing list.
3. Place, trade or sell advertisements in your member’s area.
4. Build your credibility online and brand yourself as an expert.
5. Endorse new products or third party recommendations to your members.
6. Sell the business away as an exit strategy.

WHY IT DOESN’T

Unfortunately, running a membership site is also one of the most challenging Internet Business models. I would be lying if I said running a membership site is easy, though not necessarily extremely difficult.

Unless you have a good support team, operating your membership site can be time consuming and finding new content can quickly turn into a chore.

IS THIS FOR YOU?

If you don’t mind a bit of hard work in the initial stages – or better still, have a plan to outsource the maintenance to other people during operations – you can enjoy residual income from your own membership site.

Hope this helps!
